Sticky: Elements missing page

If you have purchased, or are planning to purchase Elements, please read this first.

Argh.   AAARGH.

On Thursday we became aware of a printing error in the just-released Elements by Tanuki Kamogawa.  Page 110 (third-to-last page of L’Amoureuse) should not be blank.  We’ve done a random sampling of our books, and it appears at the moment that the error is present in every single copy.  (Hence, don’t exchange your books just yet.)  The error was introduced at the printing stage, as the page was not missing from our layout files.

We are still awaiting a reply from the printer to see whether they’re williing to do anything to rectify the problem, although to be honest we’re a small run pub so a fresh print run is not likely.

With my deepest apologies, here is the actual page 110:

 (150dpi jpeg)

In the meantime, please feel free to use the comments section to report if you actually have a good copy.  Or call me demeaning names.  I deserve it.

Edit:  If you plan to print out this page and include it in your book, please do not use tape, glue, staples, or anything permanent at this point yet.  We are still in discussion with the printer.

  1. Simon, you poopiehead!

In all seriousness, thanks for the quick discovery and response to this issue. I discovered it early this morning on a quick flip through of the book, but I decided to wait before making any action on it.

Now to figure out how to print this off and integrate it into the book.

  3. SIMON! HOW COULD YOU! IT HAS VAGOO ON IT TOO! BASTARD!

And hey, who do I e-mail about updating my shipping info? I plan to get back to proper reviews after I finish my epic move to Simi Valley, CA. YAAAY! :D

  4. I won’t get my copy until the beginning of February (I mail order all my comics and they ship to me at the end of the month) but I think I will be okay with this. It definitely won’t stop me from collecting Icarus books, which by and large I have had nothing but high marks for.

  5. Yeah, the worst part about it is that the page is a spread… =(

Again, my apologies. Thing is, we don’t request proof approval due to time constraints, but because of that, we prepare our files as large, single PDFs, with all pages converted to pure bitmaps. Not many pubs go that extra step. I assumed that would eliminate most layout-related issues, since there’s no possibility for any “linking” errors, and no fonts to mess up. Guess I was wrong.

A retroactive price cut isn’t going to fly with most retailers. I haven’t received an answer from the printer yet, so I can’t say whether we can work out a compromise, though chances for that aren’t good either. The most likely thing we may do now is release that entire chapter as a high-res ebook in PDF/CBZ. We’ll come to a decision in a few more days. Stay tuned to this post.

  7. Shit happens. Our very first book had a duplicate page in it.
