Important: Elements voluntary recall/replacement

Icarus Publishing will be conducting a voluntary exchange of Elements by Tanuki Kamogawa.  (ISBN 978-1-934075-15-9, Diamond code OCT07 3576)

Elements by Tanuki Kamogawa was found to contain an error which affected the entire print run.  I would like to extend my apologies to all customers, retailers, and distributors for this oversight.  We are dedicated to improving the quality of our publications, and stand behind our work.  Therefore, with the cooperation of our printer we have decided to replace all affected copies of Elements.

All copies already sold will be replaced.  The new printing will NOT contain any indication that it is the corrected version, other than having the missing page.  It is up to you to check for it.

The new printing should become available in March or April.  At that time, we are asking that all retailers participate in a voluntary exchange program.

If you are a customer who recently purchased Elements, please do the following:

  1. Keep your copy for the time being.  Please contact the retail establishment where you purchased your book, and let them know that there will be a voluntary recall/exchange.  Ask for a receipt to facilitate the exchange when the new printing arrives.  Please keep your copy in original sale-able condition, and return it at the time of exchange, or follow retailer directions.
  2. If your retailer is not aware of this program, please point them to this page.
  3. Please note that replacement copies will be sent out to every retailer for every copy already shipped, so there’s no advantage for us whatsoever for you not to trade for the corrected copy.  We appreciate the sentiment, though. =)

If you are a retailer, please do the following:

  1. Please halt all sales of Elements for the time being.  Do not offer any exchanges or refunds until the new printing ships.  We have not worked out all details with our distributors, but when the new printing arrives, you can expect to receive the exact number of replacement books.  You may want to contact your distributor right now (ahem, Diamond) about this to ensure that you will receive your copies.
  2. We understand that this recall/exchange may incur additional charges for you, but we feel it is important for all retailers to participate to ensure that all customers are satisfied with their purchasing experience.  Therefore, we will NOT require the affected copies to be returned or destroyed.  Rather, we recommend that after all exchanges have been made, that the affected copies be sold as “damaged” or “used” books, at an MSRP of $14.95 or less.  In other words, you guys lucked out!  But please remember to hold these books until all exchanges have been made.

That is all for now.  Please keep an eye on the Icarus Publishing webpage for any new details.

  1. I hope this doesn’t hurt your finances too much.

If I had bought a copy of Elements, I would just keep the defective one and not bother the poor small business.

Although, I’m also a person who bought a slightly misprinted copy of Gunslinger Girl vol4, just because it made it more unique (The first chapter was printed upside down, backwards, and slightly cut off). Even though there was a proper copy right next to it on the shelves.

  2. Thanks. We’ll be okay. Sure, I may have to cut back on the champagne and caviar, but I’ll live. ;)

But honestly, from the beginning we felt that if a reprint was feasible, we’d do it (and kudos to the printer and our liaison for working out a deal.) Not just for the fans, but for the artists who give us the privilege to publish their works. We don’t pull down Viz money… heck, we probably don’t pull down Viz’s janitor’s money. The artists work with us not for the paltry advances we can pay them, but because they share our enthusiasm in bringing their works out for audiences in the West. So the least we can do is to make sure their books are presented in the best possible way. I send a batch of every book to Japan, and I’d hate to disappoint any of them with a bad book, even if it’s just one page.

  3. And I should make clear that we will be shipping the exact same number of books originally ordered to every one of our distributors. That means you will not save us any money by not trading in your bad copy. So absolutely do trade in your books when the new printing arrives, unless you want your retailer to basically get a new book for free. I do appreciate the sentiment, though.

  4. Simon,

Since I collect every Icarus book, I’m considering keeping my flawed copy (when I get it) and also getting a fixed copy to go along with it. Is that feasible?

We’ve asked mail order retailers to at least waive the requirement to return the first copies. I would suggest speaking with your retailer and working out some kind of arrangement.

This recall is operating on good faith basis… we can only ask that retailers participate and offer our guidance; we cannot force them to do anything. The final decision on how to handle the exchange are left to the retailers.

  7. The printer is at fault and should of printed out 1 test copy to check before running out the batch in the first place, they must have insurance for this sort of thing, and I imagine Icarus should too. Ah my Goddess 25 from Dark Horse had all the pages ripped so they had to go back, waited 5 months for that to be reprinted, also had and seen entire batches of certain Image, Marvel and Dc comics been replaced, so it happens.

I believe I have every book published so far by Icarus, with the exception of Elements which is on the way to me now.

I generally use the ISBN to determine what Icarus books to buy, so I will not buy a reprint where the ISBN doesn’t change. For example, I own both editions of Innocence but not the new printing of Midara.

The only thing that has currently changed for me since the linked photo was taken on the 27th of January is that I now have a copy of Eros’s Milk Mama.

  9. Aww, but it’s *heftier.*

  10. The new edition of Midara is heftier? What changed about it? Because if the content changed, I would be surprised that you didn’t issue it a new ISBN.

  11. Thicker paper. ^_^;

  13. The thick paper helps for people WHO LOSE CONTROL BECAUSE OF HOW HOT MIDARA IS. Good god.

Also, there was a borderline eromanga on the shelves at Borders when I went here in Simi Valley.

It’s called Sundome from Yen Press. How they got this book into borders, I do not know, but IS A NEW ERA UPON US?! It’s not exactly explicit, but there is plenty of stuff you don’t see too often on the shelves… and the cover leaves little to the imagination. YAY FOR NEAR-PORN IN BORDERS! A VICTORY FOR THE COMMON MAN!

  14. Also, I bought the hell out of it, in case anyone was wondering.

  15. Sundome is (as I discovered when I checked) by the same author as Kyōkasho ni Nai!, which was made into the anime Very Private Lesson. I named a few others of the same type in the Anime on DVD forums review thread about Sundome (though Simon has mentioned most of them in the past).

  16. I’m just now finding out about this through the notice in AG #77 which only recently hit up the comic store here where I get my erotica on a regular basis. (I hadn’t checked the site here for ages)

It’s been a bit of time since I’ve bought Elements and even though I’ll inquire about the corrected version recall/exchange, it’s basically my word against theirs since I didn’t save the receipt. Seeing as how I could’ve bought Elements anywhere else, is it also viable for me to just send the errored version directly to Icarus Comics and you would just resend me the corrected version?

The page error doesn’t bother me drastically in that I’ll pitch a hissy fit if I can’t get it exchanged, but if there IS a way to do it, then it’s all good.

Oh yeah, Sundome was pretty fun to read, even though I can’t say it’s erotica per sé. More like bawdy, ribald humor. Which has its place amongst explicit hotness, too!

  17. Hello,

The comic stores are getting their copies in right now. Please contact your comic store first and see if they’re willing to do the exchange without a receipt. (Be polite.) We’ve asked our distributors to tell all stores not to sell until all exchanges have been made, so it should be easy for them to figure out (especially since you are a regular customer with them). If that fails, please contact me via email at the top left hand side of this page.  We’ll talk to them to see if we can figure something out.

Unfortunately, it’s not viable for us to conduct the exchange directly.  We’ve already paying *twice* to reship these books out to retailers and distributors.
