AX links; Manga industry comes out against regulations

For AX08 roundups, ComiPress WINS.  For a Cliff’s Notes version of manga announcements from the con, head to MangaBlog.

The big news seems to be what’s going on between Funimation, and Geneon and ADV’s anime catalog.  There are better reports out there, but ICv2′s summary is to the point and bereft of drama.

Now, I did want to announce some new licenses at AX, but I couldn’t cross their moat.  Plus, they were hurling bears at me.  So the new titles announcement will have to wait a while…

Edit: Giapet’s AX news index.  Wow, that’s a lot of work in three days.

Neat… 10 do’s and dont’s for a new comic publisher.  Some of it is easier said than done (idealistic, even), while others are common sense we all wish we practiced enough of.

+++

As a manga publisher of sorts, I’m legally required to be jingoistic and maintain an optimismic outlook on the industry’s future.  Christopher Butcher, however, is under no such obligation.  Read about what he feels are the US manga industry’s failings and challeneges that must be faced head-on in the coming years (part 1, part 2).

Edit: Semi-related… Kai-Ming Cha complains about people who don’t “read” manga, but are simply married to certain genres.  Then again, isn’t it the same way in all of book publishing?  There are readers who read only horror.  Heck, there are readers who read only Stephen King. (Found via The Beat)

You know, one of these is actually a fantastic idea

Missed it… Right Stuf is currently having a 20%-off sale on all in-stock items, including books from Icarus Publishing.  The sale ends on the 9th.  (Thanks, Dr. Watson)

Sankaku Complex points to a petition against the outlawing of “loli” manga, signed by various manga artists, translators, editors, printers, and other industry types.  Among the signatories of this “Save Manga” movement, as far as more recognizable artists to US readers, are Kenichi Sonoda (Gunsmith Cats), Rei Hiroe (Black Lagoon), Beauty Hair (the artist behind the Honey Room controversy), and the artist who drew “Hating the Korean Wave.”

But, to be honest, most of the mangaka on the list are ero mangaka.  Heh.

  1. Hmm, let’s see… as a publisher, were you most excited about the idea of Targeted Demographic Pricing? Or did you like the idea of saving money by not translating anything?

  2. I was referring to Nascar manga. Manga is just like Obama right now… it needs to abandon its earlier ideals and move to the center, appealing to blue collar Americans while alienating core constituents. YES WE CAN (sell out)!!

(As far as not translating anything… ask around and you’ll know we already do that.)

  3. Isn’t the nascar manga berserk since it has everything in the arnold/rambo movies from the 80s violence wise and some t&a for extra plus a well thought out storyline O.O

  4. Nascar…

    -Doesn’t have 80s violence.
    -Doesn’t have T&A.
    -Doesn’t have a well though-out storyline.

If it did, I’d watch Nascar.

  5. I thought you were talking about the fans of nascar since violence t&a pretty much would make it sellable to them since 2/3 are at nascar events violence (drunk fights/crashes) & occasional women flashing a.k.a. beer flowing like water.
but the race itself is boring its the outer parts that would like berserk outside of left turns lol

  6. Actually, a NASCAR manga could be really interesting now that I think about it. I never thought that I’d find manga about Go or firefighting interesting, but done right they were utterly engrossing.

And admit it: You were really most excited about the Gambit + Nightwing yaoi.

  7. A re-envisioned Speed Racer with Nascar branding, racked at Talladega’s concession stands, would sell gangbusters.

Eyeshield, racked at the memorabilia store at any stadium, would sell gangbusters.

Hand a free copy of Slam Dunk #1 to everyone 14-and-under at every NCAA basketball game, and the rest of the issues would sell gangbusters.

    Manga isn’t selling out ENOUGH.

  8. You, sir, are a genius. I wonder if Viz has ever thought of doing these types of promotions? Everyone keeps talking about how sports manga don’t sell in the U.S. the way they should, but no one ever does anything about it.

And didn’t Tokyopop have some cross-promotional deal with the NBA awhile ago? Does anyone know if that did well?

  9. It’s your idea, man…

I remember Viz doing *something* with Eyeshield 21 and the NFL. Don’t remember what it is exactly.

  10. Wasn’t it showing episodes of eyeshield 21 on the nfl kids site or something?

makes me wish berserk actually had some ads but berserk sells itself not to mention the crowd who already have originals buy dh versions as well.

    maybe eden could be promoted along with a futuristic barren action movie too bad mad max isn’t around anymore -.-;

    Ah.

Viz could do a whole lot better…

  12. Strangely enough the mangaka for Firefighter is currently working on a manga about go-cart racing… NASCAR star Jeff Gordon started as a go-carter. Maybe Soda-san is working his character up to NasCAR.

  13. Cue Keanu Reeves impression:

    “Whoa.”

  14. Maybe you could sell spirit of capitalism at g8 summits simon I’m sure the business men would read them during the free time and you may be able to sell it to the protesters outside as well double the sales.
