SDCC stuff

ComiPress once again delivers a very complete index of manga-related SDCC coverage and licenses.  Of the more amusing happenings (or non-happenings):

  • Viz will finally publish 20th Century Boys and Pluto.  If I recall correctly, Viz has long intended to release the two series, but artist Naoki Urasawa requested that Monster be finished first, so as not to create a jarring impression of regressed art quality for readers.
  • How do mangaka keep up their monthly or even weekly publishing schedules?  Like this.
  • Tekkonkinkreet won the Eisner for best manga against high-powered competition.  Viz editorial manager Tracy Todd was there to accept the award.
  • A tiny snippet from DMP’s panel seems to suggest that the publisher will continue to release books by Youka Nitta, although series still running in Japan will obviously be affected by her self-imposed hiatus.
  • Kodansha… wasn’t there.  That’s the two biggest manga-related consumer shows that they’ve skipped over in a row, despite committing to a launch date in September.  (Granted, that may not necessarily mean they’d be publishing in September…)
  • Tokyopop wasn’t there either, but they probably didn’t have much to talk about besides their partnership with Gentosha, which they revealed just before the convention.  Some call it a desperate move to stay afloat.  I say for TP’s sake we better not be talking about Gentosha setting up shop in America in 2010.
  • Yen’s recreation of the manga phonebook Yen+ (Yen Plus) went on sale ahead of SDCC.  Early reviews available here and here.
  • And, not quite manga related, but EVIL DEAD 4 is “in the wheelhouse.”  I have no idea what that expression means, but these guys seem pretty sure it’s a confirmation of the sequel from Sam Raimi.

In absence of other non-SDCC news, I’d like to inaugurate the relocated blog database with a new random pr0n post!

Yup, I finally got the Imonatsu manuscript.  In fact, I’ve had it for a few weeks.  I just wanted to have a little more alone time with the exclusive, uncensored goodness.

  1. Split a 10×10 booth with me for SDCC 2009? I have enough 6′x2′ wire grids to hang curtains onto to hide your half.

  3. DMP didn’t have a panel at SDCC but I got to talk to their crew on the floor for PW. If I remember correctly they tossed out Prime Minister’s Secret Diplomacy as an example of a title that might be stuck with a chapter or two to go before tank completion (but I might be wrong about that).

20th Century Boys was announced years ago, but I don’t believe PLUTO was. Weird rumors of issues between Viz and Tezuka Pro had me wondering if this title would ever get brought over. Glad it will next year cause it blows 20th Century Boys out of the water.

And the strange thing about the TP + Gentosha deal is… Well it was announced in Japan last year.

Really? I know they had a movie deal, but I don’t know if that included becoming their worldwide agent…

Which is ironic, because I thought TP moved into original content because of Stu Levy’s distaste for being treated as a mere “agent” by the Japanese publishers.

  5. Nooooo, Icarus Blog has abandoned its cool theme for the infinitely more generic Tarski! >.<

  6. I hope Imonatsu has fewer instances of group sex than Tuna Empire’s other work. I love his illustrations, but find group sex, at least on Tuna Empire’s scale, unapealing.

Although, I am starting to grow fond of Tarsky’s options. Or perhaps the sterile, asylum-like color scheme is slowly driving me insane.
