Manga nominated for 2009 Angouleme

Just a few other things that happened during the revelation of Broccoli’s closing…

+++

Ouch… animation legend Hayao Miyazaki lambasted Japanese “Otaku” Prime Minister Taro Aso for, among other things, making his manga hobby too prominent a part of his public persona.

Miyazaki has been critical of “otaku” culture in the past, having once gone so far as to say he feels embarrassment from the international attention Japanese animation has garnered (and this isn’t just typical Japanese self-deprecating modesty… he despises how otaku-oriented anime has become).  But this lashing has much more to do with Miyazaki’s political beliefs, and the fact that Taro Aso is, well, not very effective at his job.

Now I see… the Japanese entrepenuer who paid 21 million to cosplay in space, only to be denied a refund when Space Adventures cancelled his flight?  The dude had kidney stones.

The Comics Reporter notes that the Angouleme International Comics Festival has released the list of nominees for their 2009 awards, which includes several manga… Osamu Tezuka’s Castle of Dawn, Fujiko F Fujio’s Doraemon, and Ai Yazawa’s Nana are in the running for the Youth Selection award.  Undercurrent by Tetsuya Toyoda, Ushijima the Loan Shark by Shohei Manabe, and Drops of God by Tadashi Agi and Shu Okimoto (yeah, that wine manga), are competing in the Official SelectionL’Enfer by Yoshihiro Tatsumi (don’t know what the English/Japanese equivalent would be) and Operation Mort by Shigeru Mizuki (again, no idea what the original Japanese would be, although it looks to be one of his autobiographical short stories on the Second World War) are up for the Heritage Award.

Whoa… the latest trend in Japanese male fashion is apparently the Bro.

Or the manssiere if you prefer.  I’m not here looking for a fight.

Protip… if this movie becomes a hit, expect the creation of a new generation of latent female shotakon fans who will be able to buy yaoi manga in about 4~6 years.  Publishers, set your schedules accordingly.

  1. l’Enfer I guess would be Hell which was released in Spain oh so many years ago.

And how are Castle of Dawn and Doraemon not Heritage titles?

  2. Ooh, cool. No English version yet, I suppose?

And I have no clue what the criteria for the three award categories would be (maybe they’re going by when the books were released in Europe, rather than by original publication date). Their official selections PDF is entirely in French.

    Hmm, “Zblucops” looks really neat…

  3. No not yet, but I believe at least one of the stories from Hell was in Good-bye from D&Q.

  4. A Japanese friend wrote this comment about Taro Aso-san:

I think there’re fewer Japanese people who support Mr. Aso now. The reason is he shows how he’s stupid in front of media. For example, he said doctors don’t have intelligence and common sense. Also, he can’t read Kanji well. When he has to give a speech in front og people, he always mistakes more than 2 kanjis. He can’t read kanji properly.

  5. Ah, no doubt.

I also think the otaku contingent to whom he was so appealling are beginning to see through his facade. His whole otaku bit is just a shtick, a ruse for popular support by an ultra-rightwinger.

  6. Regarding Tatsumi Yoshihiro: there are two collections in print in Japan, titled Daihakken and Daihakkutsu. In North America, I think that most of this material has been reprinted by D&Q in their three books, while in France, the content has been split. Daihakken has been translated by Vertige Graphic in two or three books, while Daihakkutsu has been handled by Cornélius under this “L’Enfer” title.

And as for the Tori Miki interview, an English version will be available and online next Friday. You’ll be able to figure out what is being said. :-)

  7. Ah, I see. Thanks for the explanation. =)

Dang it, this is my pet peeve with these collections… why can’t they make 1-1 reproductions of the Japanese editions, like real manga publishers!?

    Yeah, I’m biased…
