January 2009 Previews Adult

The following is a list of adult manga and manga-oriented titles, extracted from the text version of the upcoming Previews Adult catalog (you may download the full file here).

Books are generally released two months after the Previews issue in which they are solicited.  Artist homepages are painfully searched for and linked (why don’t all manga publishers link to artist sites?  They’re much better at selling me on a book than another boring PR.)

The reason I cover not only our own books, but those from other adult manga publishers as well, is because adult manga generally have a harder time finding their way into retail, and the wide variety of adult manga may lead some comic shops to overlook items they actually might be able to sell.  One of the best ways to support adult manga of all kinds is to pre-order these books, and show there is a demand for them.

ERO

ICARUS PUBLISHING

It’s Blue Eyes month!  Blue Eyes 2 is getting a long overdue new printing, with a lower cover price.  For new Blue Eyes fans, this is a good time to complete your set.

RADIO COMIX

  • GENUS 90, anthology, 32pgs, $4.99, JAN09 4401

Furry comics with regular involvement from Japanese artists.  This appears to be a re-solicitation (previous orders were cancelled, I assume), and the cover price has jumped by a buck.

YAOI

801 MEDIA (Digital Manga Publishing)

  • HEY! CLASS PRESIDENT VOLUME 1 GN, Kaori Monchi, 200pgs, $15.95, JAN09 4211

801′s been soliciting one book per month for a while now… just like us.

TOKYOPOP (BLU)

  • JUNJO ROMANTICA VOLUME 9, Shungiku Nakamura, 192pgs, $12.99, JAN09 4454
  • LOVE HURTS AISHIATTERU FUTARI, Suzuki Tanaka, 192pgs, $12.99, JAN09 4455
  • YOU WILL DROWN IN LOVE, Hinako Takanaga, 192pgs, $12.99, JAN09 4453

Tokyopop/Blu seems to be coming back stronger this month with three new releases.

YEN PRESS

Yes, I do believe this is Yen Press’ first Yaoi solicitation.  And look at that cover price.

+++

Yaoi fans should be excited about this month’s solicitations.  Yen’s entry into the yaoi genre, and Tokyopop’s seemingly renewed focus, breaks a string of bad news including Boysenberry’s closing, and further delays at DramaQueen.  And Yen’s releasing their yaoi at $10.99.  A question for the yaoi readers out there: will Yen’s pricepoint change your expectations for books from other publishers?  A price war at this stage might be… dangerous for certain pubs.

Straight ero fans, not as much excitement.  No new manga (well, except our Blue Eyes 2 reissue), and Radio Comix’s signature series gets a price hike.  That’s understandable, though… I believe Radio has had to change to an out-of-state printer (previously they printed with Brenner Printing of San Antonio, which has since stopped accepting adult comics), and prices have been going up all around the industry.  We’ll just have to see how readers will adjust.

Edit: Lissa points out that Yen’s Love Quest is technically their first yaoi title, having been released this month.  Maybe I missed the listing, or it wasn’t in Previews Adult at all.  Also, Yen’s web site lists Mr. Flower Bride at $12.99… which is far more in line with the cover prices of other yaoi pubs.

  1. With Mr. Flower Bride having a Jan09 release date, wouldn’t that make their recent December release of Love Quest their “first Yaoi solicitation”? Forgive me if my understanding of the terminology is wrong. Their site lists it with a $12.99 price-tag (though it also lists that for Mr. Flower Bride also) so the slightly higher price tag remains a good point that I hadn’t noticed until you brought it up.

    Perhaps a higher price tag is reflection of licensing costs? Honestly I have no real idea, but like to think they don’t just charge more for yaoi on the mere grounds they know us fans’ll pay it. Not a bad idea though.

  2. Oh, is that so? My bad. I’m basing this completely on the Diamond Previews catalog. I may have missed their listing for Love Quest, or it may not have been listed in Previews Adult at all, if it wasn’t an 18+ only title.

    Hmm… I wonder if the Previews price is a typo. If that’s the case, that kind of makes my questions about yaoi pricing entirely moot. -_-;

  4. Thank-you for providing this list and including the Yaoi pubs :) To answer your previous question about lower Yaoi costs being a danger to other pubs (even if you found out that title is not 10.99) is that I don’t think it would put them in danger (because it’s only one book), but I would want that to influence them to lower their prices.

    So far, the cheapest Yaoi books in the biz are from Kitty Media with books at 10.99 (Crimson Spell at 11.99). Basic printing quality for the same price of a Del Rey book, though. At this point, I don’t think price really matters anymore because I became increasingly selective with which titles I was going to buy. For me, it’s all about the license. I still think to this day Be Beautiful had the best licenses, with DramaQueen coming in at second, 801 in third. So the Yaoi industry itself saved me money because my two fave pubs stopped printing. Lucky!

      But it’s Yen. Considering who they are, the ambition they’ve displayed… I expect them to have more than a handful yaoi releases.

      That said, having checked the prices of other yaoi books on their site, it appears that the $10.99 price is indeed incorrect.
