Read Me ships!

Glorious.

Read Me is shipping to distributors right now.  If you’re on the West Coast, with a bit of luck, you might even find some copies in stores early.

Robot 6 follows up with James Turner, whose series Warlords of IO was passed over by Diamond, and consequently became serialized in digital format at the SLG/Eyemelt store.  IO is sort of an unwilling test case for online-to-trade model for traditional-format comics.  But if sales of the digital issues have been uninspiring (as Turner seemed to hint at in the interview), and all hope is pinned on the trade paperback release, would it behoove both Turner and SLG to simply release portions of the comic for free online, or not bother with the single issues at all?  That raises another set of questions, mainly revolving around the lack of income during the creation phase (as discussed in recent posts about the necessity of manga serialization).  It’s hard out there for a comic book artist, man…

Speaking of which, did you know SLG has various works by FSC available for download as well?

Colony Drop trashes the romantic image of Akihabara, revealing it to be not the creative center of anime and manga culture, but a cesspool of salacious delights for emotionally stunted loners.

What, porn can’t be culture?  Elitist!

Kyodo News reports the next Studio Ghibli motion picture will be an adaptation of The Borrowers, the novel by Mary Norton.  Hayao Miyazaki will be “helping” with the film, but will not be directing.  The official site is already up.

Once upon a time, a young Miyazaki worked for Tokyo Movie Shinsha, which happens to be the same company that animated The Littles for DIC.  The Littles was based on a series of children’s books of the same name by John Peterson, which copied borrowed liberally from The Borrowers.  See, everything has come full circle.

Now that I’ve had some time to do additional tests on the nook, I can say with 99% certainty that the optimal image size for use in ePub and PDF is 600 x 730.  It’s a nice round number, and keeps the image very close to a 9 x 11 aspect ratio.  You may download the test file I used here (remember to flip to page 2.  The first page is the cover page, which is resized to fit the screen).  Also, the physical nook screen itself seems slightly offset to the left… maybe this is just my unit.  Any further discoveries will be made as edits to this post.

  1. I’M ON THE WEST COAST! Oh, I hope I get lucky.

Anyway, on to the more series matters at hand, calling the Colony Drop guy a fatty.

I’m not in the business of defending Akiba as I loathe a crowd of fat, gormless weirdos breathing heavily in just about any instance. Still, I wasn’t really clear on where he was going with the whole thing for a while there. I thought he was going to dispel myths about Akihabara, but all he really did on the front was mention that he thinks most people don’t think the shops there close… Then he went on to point out that old classic that people in Japan don’t like otaku, but I think it’s missing the point in a lot of ways.

Or rather, it gets the point but it attaches far too much weight to it. People are just creating a glossy semi-reality where they don’t mind the details and these guys, who can’t seem to separate their love of pop culture from the social and economic principles of a country, seem to think the most devilish thing you can do is ignore how Japan actually works.

It’s just escapism for silly kids, just like it’s always been. I mean fuck sake, who watches The Masters of the Universe and then goes “Well, that show is ok to like because Eternia has a solid economy that’s built on wholesome values.” Go fuck yourself.

I mean, that’s not even going into the tirade against porn which is just one of those things I’ve come to expect from those kinds of people. I’m busy enough trying to push the idea that sexuality isn’t something we need to be scared or ashamed of and then you have motherfuckers like Daryl Surat going around an injecting their blind, baseless moralism into everything.

But that’s a whole other fucking thing man. Once you get Daryl Surat championing your posts, there’s a fair chance it’s too late for you as a worthwhile human being. Pompous 29-year-old self-important shithead. OH MAN.

Still, it’s sort of amazing how they’ve used the fact that they only like old anime to form this idea in the community that they’re learned and important figures in the “otaku” world, rather than out of touch fuck sticks who barely like any of the medium that have chosen to build their modicum of fame around.

Anyway, I’m glad Read Me! is printed! THAT MAKES ME A HAPPY CAMPER since I was pretty sure you’d given up on making porn and were just going to become a pro blogger at this point.

    1. Actually, I quite like the bit of reality the article provides. In a “Akihabara is for porn loving people, not self-loathing hypocrites. Now GTFO” sort of way.

Love it, abhor it, I do not care. Just recognize it. Recognize the childish, primal, licentious energy that drives creativity in the fandom. Screw the sanitized, hollow view of otaku. Screw the people who think themselves otaku just because they watch fansubs or read scanlations. Screw people who take but give nothing in return. Screw the deniers, the revisionists, those who would seek to wipe away the deviant roots of the otaku.

      1. And here I thought you were just selling books. Haha.

I can totally agree with that part of it. Fuck the kids who think they know what they think they know. They’re all fat. And they think our delicious porn is icky and other words that a sane human would never utter without a sense of irony.

But then it’s not entirely the American’s fault. They’re not the one’s who idealized Akiba, it was the Japanese in books like NHK ni Youkoso and Maniac Road and stuff like that. THEY DENIED THE SORDID UNDERWORLD AND MADE EVERYONE SEEM QUIRKY AND FUN! Well, not NHK ni Youkoso so much, but you like the characters at the time, so you sort of come out of it with a feeling that it’s a savory place for kids to buy Naruto gachapon and wacky drinks.

I’m bored. Why are we even talking about this crap anymore? I’m so very weary. WEARY I SAY!

  2. Looks delicious. Living in Sweden, lacking stores to buy hentai from… I will probably have to wait a year or two though.

    1. You can download Comic AG Digital here (free via torrent, $0.50 USD on DriveThru):
      http://www.icaruscomics.com/wp_web/?p=1359

It contains Window by Hinemosunotari, although in hindsight I wish I had chosen a different story. It’s not representative of the rest of the book, which has a heavy futanari slant.

  3. Has Sister Summer shipped yet?

TRSI had SS on the product list for their Icarus Comics sale a while back with a release date showing September, and excitedly I placed the order, but looking back through Icarus blog posts into August I don’t see any postings about it. (Take that back, there’s something in AG Digital 04.)

    Still being worked on?

    1. Unfortunately, we’ve run into an unexpected problem with Sister Summer: the original cover art cannot be located. They’re scrambling to find it in Japan. Otherwise, all the interiors for the book is complete.

Once we get the covers, or new covers are drawn, should that become necessary, we will immediately go to print.

This has actually happened before… the cover for Honeybee Whispers is exclusive to us.
