Here’s something you don’t see everyday… ComiPress reports that the manga Jinki: Extend has ended serialization prematurely in Comic Blade due to a disagreement between the artist and the editor. MangaCast provides a lot of background information on the series.
Having never seen the manga in question, this is noteworthy for me because it’s rare to see editor/artist quarrels which end in cancellation… not that it doesn’t happen, just that these things are rarely aired publically. Ego clashes and inter-professional venom-spewing happen all the time in the Western comics world on public forums (like, oh… here), but not so much in conservative Japan, even relatively tame ones like this. Perhaps this is just a sign of the blog-driven age we live in, where people feel totally comfortable sharing their private details with strangers on social networking sites.
Sticking with Comipress, just a click below is a disheartening article on how fansubs have negatively affected the industry. Call me a cynic, but the people who need to get this message the most are the ones most likely to dismiss it out of hand, and continue to pay lip service to “honor” and “ethics” while upholding neither. Does anyone still seriously believe that the well being of the companies, and by extension artists and creators, are of any importance to people who trade licensed shows and taunt companies from their Eastern Europe-hosted servers?
