Most times you have to go look for the big news, and sometimes it kind of just falls into your lap…
From Icarus’ own comments section (is using one’s own blog as a source kosher?), Toren Smith shows that Studio Proteus and Fantagraphics’ MangErotica line is alive and kicking, and lets slip a new license. Domin-8 Me!, the second “authentic manga” release (after the excellent Pink Sniper) is indeed Take on Me by Sesshu Takemura. But it doesn’t stop there… after that, SP will release Milk Mama by Yukiyanagi (or Yanagi Yuki… we went with the spelling on the copyright notice in the back of the book. Council of Carnality fans take note!) I would expect both books to receive no less than royal treatment from Studio Proteus, whose production values are matched only by Broccoli. (Trust me, there are things only us production folks know to look for, and these two are the best out of all NA publishers.)
This is excellent news all around, but it does remind me of a little pet peeve… I wish Fantagraphics would revamp their Eros website and push their MangErotica line to the online manga audience. I’m not sure what the general views of their staff are, but the kind of comments from Jacob Covey is not particularly heartening… and makes their position as one of the best manga publishers that no one talks about all the more ironic. But no matter… at least at the production stage, these books are handled by people who truly care about them.
Oh, and one other interesting note from Toren’s post… Yanagi Yuki is a woman. See, we really don’t ask about these things.

I guessed it was a woman from the art, but when I was discussing the title with the editor he told me anyway. I think you know Kengo Yonekura is a woman, too, right? In fact, she’s a real babe–plus she’s seriously stacked. And darn proud of it, judging by the clothes she wears…. Well, nothing wrong with that, IMHO! (^_^)
As for the Yuki Yanaga / Yukiyanagi question, I was puzzled, too, but Fujimi said to use Yukiyanagi, so I did as I was told, good licenser that I am. That’s what they use for their copyright page, anyway. Go figure.
