Diamond Previews Adult June 2010

Thanks to Diamond for providing the file, which you may download here.

The following is a list of adult manga and manga-oriented titles, extracted from the newest issue of Previews Adult PDF catalog.

Books are generally released two months after the Previews issue in which they are solicited.  Artist homepages are painfully searched for and linked (why don’t all manga publishers link to artist sites?  They’re much better at selling me on a book than another boring PR.)

The reason I cover not only our own books, but those from other adult manga publishers as well, is because adult manga generally have a harder time finding their way into retail, and the wide variety of adult manga may lead some comic shops to overlook items they actually might be able to sell.  One of the best ways to support adult manga of all kinds is to pre-order these books, and show there is a demand for them.

ERO

EROS COMIX (Fantagraphics)

This is a great book.  That’s all there is to it.

ICARUS PUBLISHING

  • AT THE TIME OF SCATTERING FLOWERS GN, Yuuki, 192pgs, $19.95, JUN101042
  • SISTER SUMMER GN, Tuna Empire, 192pgs, $19.95, JUN101043

No need to harp on these books, I’ve done enough of that.  We had to resolicit them because of lateness.  Terribly sorry. m(_ _)m  But hey, the good news is we were finally able to get the original cover art for Sister Summer.

YAOI

TOKYOPOP (BLU)

  • GAKUEN HEAVEN ENDOU CALLING YOU GN, (W) Spray (A) You Higuri, 192pgs, $14.99, JUN101132
  • JUNJO ROMANTICA VOLUME 12 GN, Shungiku Nakamura, 192pgs, $14.99, JUN101131

Don’t know why the item codes are not in order, might want to verify them on the Previews order form proper…

Solid issue for manga readers, not so much for everyone else.  I was late posting this (had it for a couple of weeks), so order, order, order now!

  1. This sounds stupid, but is Sister Summer a little tamer than Afterschool Sex Slave Club? The art and storytelling was really great in that book, but I wasn’t really comfortable with the levels of abuse and humiliation going on. I was thinking it might have been a little more extreme because of the whole story within a story device giving it more space to run around though. Sister Summer looks interesting, but I’m just really squimish about that sort of thing and there’s never a good way to tell how far a book is going to go in that direction.

On that note, do you have anything like content tags or notices for the books lying around any place or is that not really doable? I thought Flash Bang was about exhibition, but holy shit, that’s like the tamest thing going on in there.

I’m really looking forward to the new Yuuki book though!

Oh and what book is that Area story from?

    1. There are two dark stories, and a two-parter with a dystopian theme,
but the rest are humorous/absurdist. There’s one story that satirizes a J-Drama which I’m sure almost no one will understand. He name checks Bruce Willis’ Japanese voice actor in another (it took me a while to figure out just what he was talking about, because I wasn’t immediately familiar with the Japanese romanization of Bruce Willis.) Tuna Empire has a really goofy sense of humor.

No farm animals in this one. A few anthro girls, though.

We don’t tag things, but we provide full chapters in Comic AG Digital.

      Area is from… Area.

      Reply

      1. Thanks for that…maybe I’ll give it a shot.

The AG Digital stories are a good preview of the general style and one chapter of a book, but they don’t exactly prepare you for something like…well, farm animals or scat or unbirthing just popping out of nowhere later on. Is the ante for adult manga all-in blind?

In the original serializations, the gross-out surprise chapters are buffered by other stories in the mag and later you already know what you’re getting when you buy a collected volume. Here, I’m told a book is exhibition stories and halfway through I get the Piss-drinking Olympics complete with urine inflation. Reading that didn’t kill me, but it’s not what paid for. What would you have me do if I don’t want to spend my money on piss inflation and unbirthing? Just not take the gamble on any of your titles? Am I supposed to be familiar with all these titles from scans?

If I’m paying niche dollar for your titles, I just think some informed niche choices would be fair. Flashbang wouldn’t have bothered me if I knew more of what I was paying for, but a good half of that book is seriously under-represented, officially. As I sit now, your saying ‘dystopian theme,’ could possibly mean loli guro if ‘exhibition’ meant piss-inflation and unbirthing.

        1. We had scat? @_@;

          Jebus, I don’t know what I publish anymore…

          1. Yeah, there was some erotic shitting in Patriot, maybe not even worth considering scat.

Whatever, the last two batches of your books I’ve bought have been 75% unpleasant surprises for me. That’s not something I should be tossing money at. I don’t know how I can communicate that in any way you’d give two shits about.

  2. Two and a half years since Eros last brought out a book and there’s been two solicitations in Previews in three months? Not that I’m complaining, especially considering the quality of the artists and the works. Although they could have done a better job on the title font of Too Hot to Handle. For comparison, the original cover can be seen at Core’s website.

    1. It hasn’t been two and a half years. Since Pink Sniper, Eros has also released Milk Mama (by Council of Carnality’s Yanagi Yuki), and Domin8 Me.

      1. Actually, it has been.

The timing of the Love Selection solicitation is amusing with how it’s being blamed for a pregnancy scandal.

        1. Heh, I stand corrected. I thought Domin8 Me was more recent.

          Man, time flies.

  3. I can barely contain my excitement about Love Selection getting an English release. Nice to see Sister Summer’s cover was finally found. I’m definitely looking forward to more Tuna Empire.

  4. Why weren’t you able to get the original cover art for Sister Summer initially.

Also, it’s great to see Eros publish something new. Gunma Kisaragi no less.

    1. It was lost, and they had no digital backups.

  5. I know you’ve mentioned it, and yet somehow I still managed to miss that you were putting out Love Selection. *Adds that to Diamond pre-order*

Any chances of Giri Giri Sisters getting a US release?

  6. Oh, whoops. Just realized I confused yours and Eros’ listings. Nevermind. Me read good sometimes… o_O

    1. Heh.

Needless to say, all Core Magazine requests should be sent to Eros/Fanta, they seem to be cozy there.

  7. Cool, thanks Simon. I’ll send them an e-mail next chance I get. Glad to see more Tuna Empire coming from you. I’ve read the Japanese version of Summer Sisters and though it’s been a couple years, I remember enjoying it every bit as much as Spirit Of Capitalism, so it’s an auto-buy for me too.

  8. Man, after lying dormant for a good while eros is coming through with some top flight porn creators. Hopefully they sell well so they can release some of their newer works and some other Core releases. The Core umbrella has some of my favorite artists.

Icarus does work primarily with Akaneshinsha, right? Any possible updates on the Kemonono book or any other Yamatagowa stuff? Also kind of interested in how you come across a license, do you have to request a specific book from the licensor or do they just send a box of porn with a contact us after going through them.

I wish a liked Tuna Empire’s stuff since he has a decent number of books out in English but while I don’t have any problem with his art, I prefer my drawn porn to be of the consensual side and he seems more on the other side of the tracks from my experience.

    1. Groove Tube is mostly done. Witchcraft is halfway finished, probably solicit it for next Previews Adult. Groove Tube afterwards, because that one has more stuff to check…

No strict licensing procedure. They send me books they think I’ll like, I request books that I know I like. They’re quite easy going about the process.

  9. Forgot to add, but I’ve always thought it was kind of weird that Ei Itou had his complete 6 volume non-porn series released in English but has never had one of his porn books released. I know it’s fairly common for beginning manga creators to draw porn starting out and then have their big hits released by English companies (say Kiyohiko Azuma for example) or even both (like Oh Great) but how rare is it to have an artist who primarily and actively does porn to have his only somewhat serious series to be released in English.

I think other than the porn and Tetragrammaton Labyrinth, Itou has only done a couple of fanservice one-shots and a very ecchi maid series. It just surprised me that he’s found a way to slip through the cracks, though I can definitely see why his earlier more loli-centric books didn’t make the grade but his last couple of books I think are loli-free so maybe there’s a chance. A man who buys Japanese comic porn can dream. I’m sure there had to be some people out there who bought Tetragrammaton Labyrinth and thought “I would buy porn drawn by this guy”. crossover appeal and synergy and buzzwords at work!

    1. >but how rare is it to have an artist who primarily and actively does porn to have his only somewhat serious series to be released in English.

That’s not rare, that’s the norm. There aren’t that many active English ero manga publishers.

A lot of mangaka started out in porn (pro or doujinshi), many of them used pseudonyms, and some worked as assistants or in a circle. Plenty of mangaka published in US have porn backgrounds that readers simply don’t know about.

As for Ei Itou… I believe his porn output is mainly through Wani Magazine. No idea what their stance is on licensing out ero manga.

      1. By calling it rare, it meant more so how many authors were still regularly producing porn for a serialization while having their non-porn works published in English rather than have worked on porn and then went more to the mainstream while still having a porn and non-porn works in English, aka Taro Shinonome. I can think of Cuvie and Ei Itou off the top of my head but it doesn’t seem too lengthy.

Good news on Groove Tube and Withcraft. Speaking of Kemonono, it saddens me that he’s doing a normal manga for FlexComics now since CMX had some type of exclusive deal with them and where in the process of releasing or going to release a decent # of FlexComics books this summer until CMX died.

        1. Oh, I see.

Yes, certain artists go “legit” and don’t produce more adult works, but it’s usually more often due to the time constraints placed upon them by the weekly or monthly schedules of mainstream magazines. The typical ero manga short is 16 pages, but in mainstream manga, you’re looking at 32 and up, at a regular clip.
